Animal Humane Association of Star Valley It's All About the Animals!
Harry is doing well. He decided to meet the dogs with some supervision yesterday and today is confident enough to hang out with them in their space.
So he is busy exploring the house outside his sanctuary and then going back to his space when he wants to. And he loves laying under the Christmas tree. He “talks” to us quite a bit too. He’s a gem, and we’re really enjoying him. Jennefer Parker
Obie (formerly Oscar) joined our family in Colorado on August 19, 2021.
He is such a treasure! What a loving, smart, athletic, fun, and joyful being he is, and all of our lives are so greatly enriched having him in our family. Obie is “living the dream” in our mountain house during the week with lots of outdoor fun, and our Grand Junction house weekends with his brother, Cocoa, enjoying his big backyard.
We are deeply grateful to you for all of the incredible work you do, and for letting us have Obie! May you and all the animals you help be as blessed this holiday season as we are.

Animal Humane Association of Star Valley attended the Alpine Holiday Craft Fair Saturday, December 11th. We are very grateful to Leanna Simmons for hosting the event along with a raffle to benefit our shelter, Lucky’s Place. We sold almost 400 raffle tickets!
Westbank Sanitation generously volunteers to pick up garbage at the shelter.

Both my husband and I grew up having dogs as part of the family. In fact, I couldn’t remember a time when we didn’t have a dog. We each had a dog when we were married, his a Black Lab and mine a Heinz 57. The first time we didn’t have a dog was when we had to put down the last of three pups that were intentionally fathered by my husband’s Lab. We lasted a month and a half. We were going crazy! There was a huge hole in our lives that needed to be filled by a dog.
We decided to adopt a rescued dog. I called the City Offices to locate the pound and was referred to Mary Ann Ahrens, President of the Humane Society in Star Valley. She emailed me a picture of Herbie, a Black Lab puppy. One look at the picture and I knew he would be our next dog. It was love at first sight! This was before Lucky’s Place had been built and Mary Ann was fostering Herbie at her home with many other animals. We went to see Herbie and both fell in love with him. We weren’t able to take him home that day, because we needed to prepare our dog yard for a puppy. The week we had to wait seemed like a month. When we went to get Herbie, Mary Ann told us that if we changed our minds, we could bring him back. We told her that Herbie was ours and there was no chance we would be returning him. He sat on my lap and fell asleep on the way home.
It was quite an adjustment to have a lively puppy after a 15-year-old dog. Herbie definitely filled the hole in our lives. Now we had a dog to take for walks and rides, that always wanted to play, lifted our spirits, and was always so happy to see us. He was a faithful companion and brightened our lives every day. When Herbie was about 10, we started to notice him having difficulty seeing. He was diagnosed with retinal degeneration and eventually went blind. He adapted well to his disability, much better than we did at first. Throughout his life, he was always the most loving, happy dog. Herbie was our best dog ever.
Dogs give their owners unconditional love and are always there for you. Good animal owners return that love throughout their pet’s life, especially at the end. It’s extremely difficult to say goodbye to a pet that has been a member of your family. But in the end, owners have to return that love by doing what’s best for their pet. Due to illness, we had to let Herbie go when he was 14. It was one of the hardest days of our lives, but it was best for him.
Four months after, we adopted another rescue dog, Carley. She has filled the hole that Herbie left in our lives, but will never replace him, because Herbie and our other dogs will always live in our hearts.

I just wanted you to know that Annie is doing so well, and she is as smart as a whip. She can shake, sit, lay down and turn over. There was a little problem with her heeling everyone, but I think we have that under control.
Hi my name is Tenne and I would like to share my story with you.
Last August, I just happened to be looking on Petfinder’s and found what I had been looking for. Ghost was as close to the real thing as they come! He was just what I wanted and I knew I had to meet him. I called ahead and made an appointment to meet Ghost the next day. Ghost was handsome, full of energy, bright eyed and bushy tailed, as they say, and it was LOVE at first sight for me and I think it was for Ghost too. As you can tell by the pictures, we dressed the part!
I renamed Ghost to Shiloh because I have a horse named GhostDancer. Shiloh loves going on trial rides with me and loves to drink from the fresh streams. He is always looking behind to make sure I am on the same trail as he is. He jumps up to lick Tazo on the muzzle. Shiloh has set the pace for my Rocky Mountain Gaited horse Tazo. Before Shiloh came into our lives Tazo seemed somewhat complacent in his gait, but now he travels at a much faster gait to keep pace with Shiloh!

Rugged is a very sweet dog he loves to be with us and play fetch. Over the short amount of time he has been with us after adoption, his personality is really starting to come through. He loves to watch and observe what we are making in the kitchen, he loves to give kisses, and he loves to be close with us. If we are in separate rooms he will go back and forth from each room until one of us joins the other and he will lay close to both of us. He will comfort you when you’re sad and lick your tears away. He loves to play fetch and play with other dogs and is such a good listener! He loves to make us proud and he is our special boy. We love him so much and we are so happy to have him in our lives.
Caylyn Tobin generously donated her time and money to host the Woof-Raising Fundraiser to benefit our shelter, Lucky’s Place.
The fundraiser was a huge success, and we can never thank Caylyn enough for all she has done for our organization.
